  •   Biography
    •  Bill Berggren is an accomplished nature and wildflower photographer. After many years using 35 mm and medium format film he found his way into digital photography and videography, where it appears that he'll be stuck until some marvelous new technology is developed.

Bill seeks out and photographs commonplace as well as unusual flowers and plants, with or without their insect partners. His focus is on nature photography in and around southeastern Wisconsin; although he's been known to find his way into northern Illinois on occasion. Over the years he's photographed most of southeastern Wisconsin's indigenous wildflowers as well as those of several surrounding states.

"We are blessed with diverse ecologies which include dunes, marsh, prairie and woods, as well as creeks, rivers and the ever changing face of Lake Michigan ... all in close proximity," said Bill. "Each of these provides its own challenges for a nature photographer."

And sure enough, his daylight hours, summer and winter, often find him wading a marsh in the morning and wandering a dusty prairie trail in the afternoon.

  •   Artist Statement
    • "I work with light, color and shades of gray," said Bill. "I process my own digital images as I once did with film. I do not use a professional print lab as no one else knows the mood of my original image as well as I. So no one else is qualified to reproduce that mood in a print. To preserve that mood I print my photographs on high quality, glossy, acid-free, archival paper rated by the manufacturers as fade free."

"When I edit, I edit gently," said Bill. "For example, if there's a slight blemish or an insect on a flower, it's likely that Mom Nature intended it that way. So who am I to edit Mom Nature's work? Nor do I stage my insect pictures. Bees, Butterflies, Dragonflies and the like respond kindly to kind treatment, allowing themselves to be photographed from only inches away. I just don't feel that it's my place to mess with that kind of trust."

And while Bill doesn't claim to be a landscape photographer, his photographs of Half Dome and Yosemite Falls are breath taking; as are his photographs of San Francisco, including those of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Bill takes great pleasure in sharing and showing his pictures to anyone who will pause to look. "I even send out a daily email showing my latest images. It's for folks who don't get into the woods themselves," he said. "To be included in my daily emails please email
BillB@SpectrumSchoolandGallery.org and I'll be happy to add you to my mailing list."

Bill's images are printed 8x10 inches and mounted as 11x14 inch framed pictures. But he can also do other sizes and formats from note cards to 16x20 inch mounted and framed pictures. Occasionally a client wants a print of a wildflower not shown at Spectrum Gallery and if they drop him a line he will search his archives to accommodate the request.
