Gallery Aesthetics
(and
tips for hanging a show)
1.
Traditionally, we have hung shows where the middle of each piece of
artwork is at eye level, with even spacing and no stacking. (gallery
style) This is done so the eye can take in each piece and so
viewers feel a restful balance in the room.
2. Larger
pieces on the ends of the walls and on the east and west walls tend to
frame the other smaller pieces.
3.
Artwork having an obvious direction in the composition can be situated
to "point" or flow to the rest of the work on the wall or through the
galleries.
4. Two
dimensional artwork is easier to hang if hung by a wire.
Small Gallery, Rainbow Room and Porcelain
Gallery
1. The
west wall of the Small Gallery and the North wall of the Rainbow Room
are hung "salon-style" with stacking and closer proximity to one
another. This prompts the viewer to look at the arrangement for a longer
period of time and offers more to look at.
2. The
North wall of the Small Gallery and the Porcelain Gallery (bathroom) are
for Black and White artwork and photographs.
3. The
other walls of the Small Gallery and Rainbow Room are hung gallery
style, to offer the eye to rest.
Hallways
1. The
entrance and hallways are hung gallery style for a more welcoming
balance and flow, and to give optimal importance to the artwork.
